EATING YOUR HEART OUT is the body of Vera Mantero, drawn, installed, choreographed, seen, alive and hanging from one of the spheres. This is the body that brings meaning to everything. The body is the happening by which all things happen. The miraculous body of Vera Mantero frees itself from the floor, animated by drawings, that redesign it, and continues the search for its place, out of the reach of all convenient circumstances. Iron sculpture and living body. A choreography without ground, for a human body and iron and the world surrounding them.

Lisbonners and Helsinkians reveal the power of art for self and social transformation.

In 2011 Portugal’s Ministry of Culture was dismantled for the second time.  This event coincided with the national premiere of Atlas, a performance by Ana Borralho and João Galante which was inspired by artist Joseph Beuys’ philosophy, which asserts ‘we are the revolution' and 'everybody is an artist'.

Blending the personal, political, professional and artistic, this performance invited 100 Lisbonners with different professions to perform a choreography of resistance.  It launched Atlas to international stages where each country’s participants add their cultural nuances to this social sculpture.

O solitude, my sweetest choice!

Places devoted to the night,

Remote from tumult and from noise,

How ye my restless thoughts delight!

INSTITUTE of GLOBAL SOLITUDE

It comes after our previous projects on Space and on Knowledge.

Now, our dear colleagues are proposing an inquiry about Time.

The past is available through being stored in memory; the future through inference.

The limits that time presents form truth of our existence.

These limits may not be natural to Time at all.

If the reach of space and the range of knowledge are so vast, why do we restrict time?

It was one of those lovely mornings that have never been before.

The sun was just coming up and you saw it between the eucalyptus and the pine.

It was over the waters, golden, burnished - such light that exists only between the mountains  and the sea.

It was such a clear morning, breathless, full of strange light that one sees not only with one’s eyes but with one’s heart.

And when you see it the heavens are very close to earth, and you are lost in beauty.

You know, you should never swim in public, or with another, or in a group; you should swim only in solitude, in the quiet of the night, or in the still, early morning.

When you swim in solitude, it must be in solitude.

You must be completely alone, not following a system, a method, repeating words, pursuing a thought, or shaping a thought according to your desire.

This solitude comes when the mind is freed from thought. When there are influences of desire or of the things that the mind is pursuing, either in the future or in the past, there is no solitude.

Only in the immensity of the present this aloneness comes.

And then, in quiet secrecy in which all communication has come to an end, in which there is no observer with his/her anxieties, with his/her stupid appetites and problems -

Only then, in that quiet aloneness, swimming becomes something that cannot put into words.

I don’t know if you have ever swam, if you have ever been alone, by yourself, far away from everything,  from every person, from every thought and pursuit,  if you have ever been completely alone, not isolated, not withdrawn into some fanciful dream or vision, but far away, so that in yourself there is nothing recognisable, nothing that you touch by thought or feeling, so far away that in this full solitude the very silence becomes the only flower, the only light, and the timeless quality that is not measurable by thought.

Only in such swimming love has its being.
